L-carnitine is a quaternary amine composed of lysine and methionine. It metabolizes long-chain fatty acids to produce energy. 95% of total carnitine in the body is found in the myocardium, and produces energy for the constant pumping action of the heart. L-carnitine deficiency in dogs is correlated with the appearance of dilated cardiomyopathy. Supplementation with L-carnitine protects against the accumulation of fatty acids within the myocardium cells.

Taurine is crucial for maintaining a healthy heart metabolism through its action to regulate calcium ions, osmotic potential and neutralizing free radicals. Taurine has anti-arrhythmic properties, by regulating the heartbeat rate through the level of calcium ions and ensuring the integrity of myocardial cells. Taurine deficiency directly contributes to the appearance of dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs.

Coenzyme Q10 is essential for energy production in the body. It is also a natural antioxidant in mitochondria, where it eliminates a very high number of free radicals created by the large amount of energy required to pump the heart.

Selenium is an integral part of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase that is involved in antioxidant mechanisms. Its function is directly dependent on the presence of vitamin E. Selenium prevents oxidative stress effect, that is considered key in the pathogenesis of dilated cardiomyopathy.

Vitamin E in combination with Selenium is a powerful antioxidant and protects endothelial cells against excessive contraction of the heart. It also reduces platelet aggregation and adhesion of blood in the coronary arteries, which facilitates blood flow through the vessels and nourishes the heart.
